Burst Pipes Canceling Members Painting Workshops

We regret to inform our members that during the frigid cold Valentine’s Day weekend, power went out at the Kellogg-Eddy House shutting off the furnace and pipes froze and burst. The water in the house has been shut off until the situation is resolved, so the Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon painting workshops are cancelled until further notice.

We will continue to have our regular meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at the Newington Senior and Disabled Center, 120 Cedar St. beginning on Wednesday March 9, 2016 at 6:30 pm. Our first demonstrator is Jane Zisk who will do a landscape demo in oil as well as giving a critique of members work.

Jane Zisk Critique and Demo Wednesday, March 9, 2016

The general membership meeting of the Newington Art League will be held on Wednesday, March 9th at 6:30 p.m. at the Newington Senior and Disabled Center on Cedar Street. After a brief business meeting, the demonstrator will be Jane Zisk. These meetings are free and open to the public.

Ms. Zisk will give a critique of members art work as well as a demonstration of landscape painting in oil. Jane Zisk is the Founder of the Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society. Jane was inspired by the American artists who were painting in Cos Cob, Branchville and Old Lyme in the late 1800’s and decided to carry on the plein air tradition made popular by J. Alden Weir, Childe Hassam, and others. Jane, who has been an artist for over 30 years, has also worked as a framer for many years at Hartford Framing in East Hartford, CT. All art whether it is representational or abstract is a spiritual path to Ms. Zisk. Having overcome a chronic illness Jane sees her art as a healing experience.

Art League Members to Judge Chalk Walk

The Newington Waterfall Festival will take place on Market Square on Saturday, September 19th from 10 – 4. A highlight of the event is the Chalk Walk where artists, age 8 – adult, create their masterpieces on the street. Some examples from last year:

President, Pat Tanger, is Chalk Walk Committee Chair and Newington Art League members Fran Guzzardi, Ellen Schuman and Phyllis Small have volunteered to judge the work. A difficult task, as there are three different age groups to evaluate. The judging is based on overall impact, creativity, composition, color, and effective use of medium. Stop by and see the beautiful works before the rains wash them away.
